The Cleveland Browns are rumored to be "heavily" weighing their options to make a deal for former defensive player of the year khalil1 Mack, but it could cost them the farm to make a deal. I think it would be a perfect fit if the following happen:
They get to keep Myles Garrett
The Cleveland Browns did not have a legit pass rusher before making a deal for Jamie Collins at the deadline in 2016 and taking Garrett 1st overall in 2017, now they may have three in a two year span. If they can pull of this deal without giving up a young bull like Mack, Cleveland may set their team up immediate success and lay a solid foundation for their franchise. The Browns may not have another opportunity to put two great defenders side by side (passed on Bradley Chubb in 2018 Draft) for the next decade at least.
They could get away with only having to give up two 1st round picks
It's rumored than Oakland wants 2 1st round picks to free up Mack and move ahead with what they have on their roster. Cleveland still has around $58 million in cap space, so signing Mack to a long term deal would be no issue at all. Those first round picks that the Browns would possibly have to give up to acquire Mack, would be and even draw because he's still in his prime (27). You would be essentially giving up a luck of the draw for a former defensive player of the year that's versatile and could change the landscape of your entire team? Who in their right mind would take that deal? Oh yeah......Cleveland!
They figure out how to utilize his talent to it's full potential
Cleveland has been known for their futility since coming back in 1999, and we have seen many solid players careers fizzle out in a Browns uniform (Jamal Lewis, Willie McGinest, Andre Rison to name a few). If the Browns can put the right coaches in place and maximize Mack's potential it could be a match made in heaven. Cleveland could have three pass rushers with the potential to get double digit sacks, which is unheard of in today's NFL. Players like Mack need the perfect system and supporting cast to maximize their potential and be most effective.
They fire Hue Jackson
I hate to say this but Hue Jackson has to go! I'm not knocking his talent as a coach, but 1-31 doesn't exactly ring anyone's bell or make a player enthusiastic about coming to play there. I'm sorry, it's just what it is! The Browns missed out on some good candidates this past off-season with Steve Wilks (Arizona) and Mike Vrabel (Tennessee), so they will have to wait to bring a young, vibrant coach to take over. Jackson is a players type coach which is probably what you DON'T need, to turn a team around. Cleveland has lacked discipline as a team in the past, so it should be welcomed during their next coaching search.
These are just a few thoughts that could turn the tides for an organization that dawned one of the best players to ever play (Jim Brown), to become a laughing stock of the league. If they want to erase the last two decades from the minds of their city, now is the right time to do so!
