Smitty's Top 10 NBA players heading into the 2018-2019 season

The NBA has some of the best athletes in sports but when it comes to playing basketball, some players stand out and know how to take their game to another level. Here are my top 10 players that can do just that, play at another level.

1. LeBron James SF Los Angeles Lakers

2017-2018 Stats: 27.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 9.1 apg

The king lived up to his name this season as he carried the Cavs to a 4th straight finals appearance. He played in all 82 games (first time in his career) and endured a trade, so he's still #1.

2. Kevin Durant SF Golden State Warriors

2017-2018 Stats:  26.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 5.4 apg

The now 2-time NBA champion and Finals MVP also put on a show this past season as he excelled on the defensive side of the ball, something he isn't known for throughout his career.

3. Anthony Davis C New Orleans Pelicans

2017-2018 Stats: 28.1 ppg, 11.1 rpg, 2.3 apg

This young stud is only getting better with time, he lost his running mate in Boogie Cousins but still managed to get the Pelicans to the second round of the playoffs. If New Orleans can resign Boogie and get him a scorer on the wing lookout for this team.

4. Steph Curry PG Golden State Warriors

2017-2018 Stats: 26.4 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 6.1 apg

Curry is the engine behind the Warriors team and if you want to argue we can do just that. His unique stroke from 3 point range gives teams fits and even though he never gets credit he can pull off some impressive and timely passes.

5. James Harden SG/PG Houston Rockets ('17-'18 NBA MVP)

2017-2018 Stats: 30.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 8.8 apg

The newly crowned MVP put on a show averaging  an insane 30.4 points a game and dishing out nearly 9 assists a game.  However, could've close the door on Golden State when he had the chance, which is why he is at five.

6. Kawhi Leonard SF Toronto Raptors

2017-2018 Stats: 16.2 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 2.3 apg

Leonard spent last year on the bench with a quadriceps injury, but when he's healthy he's easily a top talent. His defensive prowess can change the complexion of any game and even his scoring numbers aren't huge, he balances both well.

7. Russell Westbrook PG Oklahoma City Thunder

2017-2018 Stats: 25.4 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 10.3 apg

The new age "Mr. Triple-Double" carried a new look team with two new additions which is why he's this low on my list, if he can get George and Melo to gel then he's got another shot at the MVP award.

8. Giannis Antetokounmpo SF/PF Milwaukee Bucks

2017-2018 Stats: 26.9 ppg, 10 rpg, 4.8 apg

The "Greek Freak" is one of the most talented forwards in the NBA and will be for a while, but he needs to find a way to really the troops to get behind him. If he can get a talented Milwaukee team to get behind him as the leader of that squad, they are going places.

9. Demarcus Cousins C Golden State Warriors

2017-2018 Stats: 25.2 ppg, 12.9 rpg, 5.4 apg

Boogie is one of the most underrated stars in the NBA but he lets his game do the talking. A double-double machine when healthy, Cousins could help Davis take the Pelicans to another level in 2018-2019. One of very few players that averages 25/10/5.

10. Kyrie Irving PG Boston Celtics

2017-2018 Stats:  24.4 ppg, 5.1 apg, 3.8 rpg

"Mr. Clutch" from the 2016 Finals missed 22 games last season and Boston's eastern conference finals run, so his return (barring an off-season trade) could make the Celtics to dog in the East.

The Falcons drafting a running back could be a smart move

The Atlanta Falcons are bringing in running back prospects to interview and work out for the upcoming NFL draft starting with Georgia running back Nick Chubb. It's something I definitely agree  with as a fan and an analyst.

What will the Atlanta Falcons do at #26?

The Atlanta Falcons are two years post-Super Bowl appearance and they still have a nice window to return there. They have some holes to fill on both sides of the ball, whether it's to find a starter or to add depth at key positions. I think they could use the #26 pick in the first round of the draft to add depth at defensive tackle, right guard, tight end or free safety. Grady Jarrett needs a big body on the other side of him, with Dontari Poe hitting free agency Atlanta has to get a space eater/gap filler that helps in the run game. Austin Hooper has been a good addition to the Falcons offense, but still needs to grow and Atlanta needs reliable hands in the red zone. Wes Schweitzer has not been consistent and has seen some bad snaps that could land him as a role player. This could be the position the Falcons could use the 26th pick but that still remains to be seen. The Falcons need depth at the safety with the team releasing Ishmael and R...
