It's almost time for college football and that also means it's time to look at some of the top players that will be chasing the Heisman trophy in 2018. There are some candidates on my list that were close last season, but they will have to battle for a chance to raise the Bronze statue in New York City come December. Here are my top seven Heisman trophy candidates:
1. Bryce Love RB Stanford
Love had one amazing season last year while rushing for 2,118 yards, he also had an astounding 13 runs of 50+ yards (NCAA record). Bryce has a chance to separate himself early with an early season showdown against Notre Dame (Sept. 29)
2. Will Grier QB West Virginia
Will Grier has come a long way from his Florida days, which could be a motivating factor in 2018 campaign. He has the perfect coach (Dana Holgerson) who will give him a great chance in his pass happy system to pad the stat sheet. Grier will also be auditioning for the 2019 draft, so look for him to try and cut down on turnovers.
3. Jonathan Taylor RB Wisconsin
This kid was a record breaker his freshman year as he broke Adrian Peterson's freshman record with 1,977 yards on the ground. He also scored 13 touchdowns last season, but what's most scary is that he has his entire offensive line returning, so that could spell trouble for the rest of the country.
4. Kelly Bryant QB Clemson
Bryant has all the tools to be a top signal caller in college football, yes he will have to throw more touchdowns in 2018 (13 last season) but his scrambling (665 rushing yards & 11 rushing TD) and ability to make plays in the open field puts him on my list.
5. Jake Fromm QB Georgia
The rookie phenom will be on everyone's watch list after nearly bringing a national title to Athens in nearly 40 years. He has the winning attitude, but can he deliver with his dynamic duo of Chubb and Michel? He had some big wins last season (Oklahoma, Auburn) so big games are not a big deal to him.
6. Drew Lock QB Missouri
Lock is sure to be a top pick when he enters the 2019 draft but he has unfinished business at Missouri. He led the nation with 44 touchdowns last season and looked like a contender even though the Tigers finished with a 7-6 record. Mizzzou will have to give him some support or he will fall short again.
7. Khalil Tate QB Arizona
When you mention Mike Vick at Virginia Tech Tate would be my first choice after he burst on the scene last year. Tate ran for 1,411 yards and 12 touchdowns but only threw for 1,591 yards and 14 scores, if he can get those passing totals up I could see him having an RGIII (at Baylor) type Heisman campaign in 2018. His record-breaking 14 carry 327 yard performance against Colorado was enough to convince me.
Those are my lucky 7 Heisman players to watch in 2018, so if you are onboard with any of these players then drop some comments in the box below!
