The LeBron James summer sweepstakes is underway and he says there are 7 teams on his radar, but which of these teams really gives him a real shot at boosting his championship resumè? I have a couple of teams in mind that I think could take LeBron above the MJ threshold, but is the King willing to make that jump? We shall see very soon, until then here are my 3 teams that make the most sense if you're trying to win titles:
This may be a long shot, but let's be real here coach Popovich is probably one of the most underrated, yet most successful coaches in NBA history. The Spurs have been one of the best franchises in the past 20 years, winning 5 rings. Tim Duncan retired, so it's time for them to get Kawhi a running mate to add some firepower. LeBron has lacked long range shooting during his last two Finals appearances, which the Spurs thrive on with their ball movement on offense. They also have been one of the best defense units in the league over the past decade, something LeBron has to have backing him the more his career advances. Finally, I think the championship pedigree that the Spurs organization offers from the front office to its players would be a first got James in his career.
2. Los Angeles Lakers
All signs are pointing to Los Angeles as the summer of LeBron is about to hit full throttle. He already has 2 mansions in the L.A. area and it's his summer vacationing spot. Rumors has it that he's enrolling his children in local schools, so let's get to the good part. LeBron would be playing for one of the most prestigious organizations in sports history, which would be a first and he would have one of the best business minds in the sports world in Magic Johnson, and it would guarantee him a competitive roster. The Lakers have a young roster on the rise and they could create the cap space to add a second max player or make a trade to bring in a third wheel (ex. Chris Paul or Carmelo Anthony). Playing on the west coast for a team like the Lakers and bringing them titles may actually help his legacy and resurrect a team that's went downhill 2 years prior to Kobe Bryant's retirement. Their 126-284 record is one of the worst 5 year stretches in team history, so it's time they put a superstar in front of Laker Nation in those expensive seats.
3. Boston Celtics
LeBron will be looking for the best fit true enough even if it means putting your biggest rival on your radar. Boston has a great team platform in place from top to bottom. It starts at the top with GM Danny Ainge and young stud head coach Brad Stevens, ends with All-stars Kyrie Irving and Al Horford. It also doesn't hurt that their two young stars Tatum and Brown could be pivotal in a championship run or become key factors in a major trade if need be, which could put this team over the top. Boston has to be the favorite next season getting back to full strength, so adding LeBron would give this team a strong chance of taking the NBA title and making a run of their own. Ainge as I said before is the one GM that can put it all together and LeBron may be the centerpiece that he needs to assemble one of the best teams in Celtics history. It's a long shot but let's be real, it's still the East and this is another legendary franchise that James could return to glory and not tarnish his legacy.
These are the three best options in my opinion if LeBron wants to add titles to his hall of fame resume, but they are a couple of more teams that could be great business decisions as well. LeBron has some of the most knowledgeable people around him at all times, so this "Decision III" will be expertly calculated and precise.
