The Atlanta Falcons are bringing in running back prospects to interview and work out for the upcoming NFL draft starting with Georgia running back Nick Chubb. It's something I definitely agree with as a fan and an analyst.
Here's why I agree with the team picking up a third running back:
Devonta Freeman suffered 2 serious concussions last season which caused him to miss 2 games and sit on the bench at the end of two. Concussions are a serious issue to any player, so it may limit his carries from this point on in his career. The new tackle rule may help but the damage has already been done. He has averaged over 220 carries in his career so look for that to change.
The Falcons Thunder and Lightning combo may only be together for one more season because it's Coleman's contract year and he may be looking to get paid. Coleman is a significant piece of the Falcons offense, he is a great receiver (60 career receptions), back up (Career high 628 yards in 2017) and 3rd down back that the Falcons depend on in key situations. If Coleman has another solid season Atlanta has to be prepared to lose him.
The first two reasons I gave can end up going down this road If Atlanta feels like it's time to make a change. If they have a solid trade for Coleman and can get good value it could be an advantage for the team and they could get something, instead of losing him for nothing in free agency. Another thing to think about, what if the team wanted to dump Freeman's salary and move in another direction at running back, it would save the team cap space and having a replacement already in place.
When you're a GM it's always a good thing to plan ahead and think about the future. It's how they keep their job and keep the team competitive, so if you think that it's nonsense to add depth at a skill position like running back, think again.
