Falcons land top receiver in the draft in Calvin Ridley

The Atlanta Falcons had to be pretty much surprised that Calvin Ridley was still on the board when they were up at #26, so they don't waste any time turning in their card in to take the former Crimson Tide receiver.

There were mixed reactions from Falcons fans, but overall they solidified their receiving core and added one more weapon to an already dynamic offense.

Ridley was a standout receiver at Alabama much like his new teammate Julio Jones. He accumulated 224 receptions for 2,781 yards and 19 touchdown receptions while in Tuscaloosa, so production was not a problem.

He is almost a Julio clone because he's a good route runner, has good speed (4.43 40-yard dash) and acceleration whic makes him tough to cover and has game breaking ability. Ridley also has bad characteristics of Julio as far as his hands, he dropped some questionable passes in college. His frame is small when measured against typical NFL receivers, which may make it hard for him create space with his body.

Ridley will have to grow at his own pace and should get a good number of touches behind Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu.

The Falcons drafting a running back could be a smart move

The Atlanta Falcons are bringing in running back prospects to interview and work out for the upcoming NFL draft starting with Georgia running back Nick Chubb. It's something I definitely agree  with as a fan and an analyst.

What will the Atlanta Falcons do at #26?

The Atlanta Falcons are two years post-Super Bowl appearance and they still have a nice window to return there. They have some holes to fill on both sides of the ball, whether it's to find a starter or to add depth at key positions. I think they could use the #26 pick in the first round of the draft to add depth at defensive tackle, right guard, tight end or free safety. Grady Jarrett needs a big body on the other side of him, with Dontari Poe hitting free agency Atlanta has to get a space eater/gap filler that helps in the run game. Austin Hooper has been a good addition to the Falcons offense, but still needs to grow and Atlanta needs reliable hands in the red zone. Wes Schweitzer has not been consistent and has seen some bad snaps that could land him as a role player. This could be the position the Falcons could use the 26th pick but that still remains to be seen. The Falcons need depth at the safety with the team releasing Ishmael and R...

Smitty's Top 10 NBA players heading into the 2018-2019 season

The NBA has some of the best athletes in sports but when it comes to playing basketball, some players stand out and know how to take their game to another level. Here are my top 10 players that can do just that, play at another level.  1. LeBron James SF Los Angeles Lakers  2017-2018 Stats: 27.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 9.1 apg   The king lived up to his name this season as he carried the Cavs to a 4th straight finals appearance. He played in all 82 games (first time in his career) and endured a trade, so he's still #1. 2. Kevin Durant SF Golden State Warriors 2017-2018 Stats:  26.4 ppg, 6.8 rpg, 5.4 apg  The now 2-time NBA champion and Finals MVP also put on a show this past season as he excelled on the defensive side of the ball, something he isn't known for throughout his career.  3. Anthony Davis C New Orleans Pelicans 2017-2018 Stats: 28.1 ppg, 11.1 rpg, 2.3 apg  This young stud is only getting better with ...
